Its safer on the sea, you are imagining how the big Earth crust surface that asteroid just have to land on your ship? When you looking at those Little Mermaid Disney Cartoon, those are      Rain + Wind. Heavy Rain    

You modern technology is surpassing that physics I know of 20 years ago. F = ma, meaning you throw something horizontally towards the flat earth surface. Same as the flat sea you are leaving off the shore.

Now. When the asteroid coming in, how you defined they coming in....its either the Earth are entering a region of those things got in the Earth atmosphere, or someone like an Angel throw a rock to the Earth, that is Comet straight down landing...that was pass, called ISON 2013.

Now You throw an asteroid in the vaccum, first, that medium its different when those rocks enter the Earth atmosphere. They becomes smaller, or they burn off. NASA suppose to have enough data by now, how the small asteroid enter the Earth upper sphere, and how much they burn off, or how fast they entering the layers of different zones in the Troposphere. Different layers of the Earth gravity that holds them in the upper sky. Before you going in those Lower Orbits Debris of the satellites clashing sites.

 Now...you are on the sea, that is the scenario.  

When something coming down from the sky, you don't have Heavy Rain + Heavy Wind. That is false. You have only sunshine there. If the asteroid hit only a region of water, that means the wave of your ship surfing at, will rise high. You have all the ships near by how you have today the Military Jet on it. I seen in Conan, I don't know the English words, the heavy terminal, one of those airplane landing or take off...

Technically you swimming inside the ocean even one hour, you won't die....

It might be Tsunami on the land, but it has nothing to do with the floating things on the sea, technically the modern technology how they design your own military use of all this Sea Shepard, you are not supposed to just randomly turning upside down.
